“Kidnappings, killings now order of the day in our region” – S/East Govs. cry out

State Governors of South-East geo-political zone have expressed worry over the rising insecurity that has led to frequent kidnappings and killings in the region.

The Governors who met in a closed-door meeting at the Government House in Enugu State on Sunday expressed worry that the insecurity has badly affected the economic activities in the region.

Addressing newsmen at the end of the closed-door meeting, the Chairman of the South-East Governors Forum, David Umahi, who decried the state of insecurity in the region lamented Our economic activities have come to a halt while kidnapping and wanton killing have become the order of the day.

Recall that it had earlier reported that Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, of Abia State, and Ebonyi State Governor/Chairman of South-East Governors Forum, Engr. David Umahi were in attendance at the closed-door meeting.

The Governors of Anambra and Imo States, Prof. Charles Soludo and Senator Hope Uzodinma are being represented by their deputies, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezi and Prof. Placid Njoku, respectively. They, however, called on the Federal Government to come to their aid in providing security in the zone bearing in mind that elections are around the corner.

Umahi disclosed that the Governors agreed to set up a 24-hour Joint Patrol on all major highways within the South East, especially during the Christmas season. He commends the States and the Federal Government on efforts to alleviate the sufferings of the victims of the recent flood menace in the Country.

On the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) court ruling, the South-East Governors said they are watching with keen interest the developments with respect to the case of Nnamdi Kanu viz-a-viz the court rulings.

However, we believe that a political solution is still possible in this circumstance, they emphasised.

The Governors Forum congratulated and welcomed the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Soludo, who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim.
